Oh, Sammy

The gorgeous and talented Sam Cooke would have been 80 years old today. There will likely be a hearty mix to follow, but until it gets posted, here's a demo version of "You Send Me" that I found a couple of years ago. It's since become my favorite recording of his.

Kelley Stoltz - To Dreamers

The consistently good Kelley Stoltz released a new album last October, and it's parhaps for fans of Richard Swift and or the Kinks, and it's called To Dreamers, and I've written a review of it, which you can find here:

Purchase To Dreamers (and a couple of others, too)

EDIT: Kelley Stoltz will be opening for his idols, Echo and the Bunnymen (eeee!) at Club Nokia in Los Angeles on May 21. Go! If not for Stoltz, then for the Bunnymen, who put on a hell of a show.

Hay guys

...need I remind you that Monotonix are hairy and like to play in the air? And that Ty Segall is a baby-faced badass? Hurrah!

Cheap Time - Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations)

Christ, can't see the word "situation" without thinking of that goddamn ab-man on Jersey Shore. Anyway. Holiday break is over, back to it.

Review of the newest Cheap Time record, posted here:

This album, it makes me so sleepy. There's a whole lotta potential in this Novak fellow, and he's released some grand stuff (including a split with Bad Sports back in August), but this one sounds awfully tired and used up for having been recorded by someone only in his mid-20s. Suffers from that Craig Nichols slur and every chord strum is FUCKIN' EPIC without needing to be. But yes, there's a whole lotta potential.
